About Dr. Valencia

Dr. Valencia is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. She earned her Masters and Doctoral Degrees in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology and a Masters of Health Sciences in Clinical Research from Duke University School of Medicine.
Dr. Valencia also completed an internship at Boston University School of Medicine’s Center for Multicultural Training in Psychology and a two-year clinical post-doctorate with Duke University’s Medical Center - Employee Assistance Program. 

Her research training includes a two-year PREMIER Research Fellow with Duke University School of Medicine and a Research Associate with Rutgers University, Center of Alcohol Studies. 
Through her education, training, community activism and experience, Dr. Valencia is highly qualified to conduct assessments and provide individual, couples, family, and group psychotherapy with adolescents and adults who are struggling with emotional, behavioral, and/or career development problems

Dr. Valencia is a member of several national and international professional organizations. She has been the recipient of awards from numerous organizations including the National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities, National Institutes of Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, American Psychological Association, Society for Prevention Research, and the National Hispanic Science Network on Drug Abuse

As a professional Latina Dr. Valencia also enjoys working closely with professional organizations in the Latino community to promote the education of and academic achievement of underserved students. She accomplishes this through collaboration and presentations to community leaders and educators on factors such as self-esteem and acculturation affecting Latino and other school children’s academic achievement. 
She has participated and collaborated on numerous projects such as the initiation of a Latino mental health clinic, El Futuro, served as a board member to the North Carolina Society of Hispanic Professionals (NCSHP), and consulted with the City of Durham Public Schools on closing the achievement gap. In addition, Dr. Valencia aims to motivate all children’s academic achievement through motivational talks and by serving as a role model.
